[Infographic] How to create your urban garden?
Summer is the warmest time of the year. Gardens face high temperatures and stressful humidity levels, and we want to enjoy it at the fullest during its best season. Lawn mowing has to be more frequent, and we have to be careful about keeping the good grass’ height.
Let’s be honest: how many of us have taken a peek at their own neighbours’ garden while they were mowing it and themselves how did they manage to have such a thick and, most of all, green garden? A garden is made by a lot of small plants, the grass stalks, that grow stronger and thicker cut after cut. The secret to a healthy and luxuriant garden is to treat it right. This doesn’t mean to water and seed it, but also to properly have it mowed.
In fact, an excessively short cut will weaken the grass and the garden will be prone to illnesses, the same way an excessively high grass will make inconvenient to move towards it and make mowing difficult.
So, what should we do to shorten it properly?
There are several elements to consider when it comes to properly take of our lawn, and some of them are strictly linked:
In some Southern European countries summer has arrived quite suddenly, with temperatures above the average. In these areas, it is advisable to have the grass cut at a height of around 6-10 centimeters. In other European countries, where the thermometer doesn’t get to these levels, the level of the cut can be 3 or 4 centimeters shorter.
At the peak of the summer season, the majority of European countries will have to face not only high temperatures but also substantial levels of humidity which will put garden owners to the test. In this case, it’s preferable to raise the height of the cut of a few centimeters, not going beyond one third of its ideal height.
During summer, it’s better to raise the cut of a few more centimeters as a higher grass stalk is better protected from the sun and endures warm season better.
Moreover, height ensures more shadow to the soil and consequently holds water better (both coming from watering or rain, and also the humidity of early mornings). In this case, garden will have nourishment on the one hand and we will have a significant decrease in the presence of weeds and funguses on the other hand.
Just take a moment to move close to your garden to closely take a look at it. During summertime, it is important to keep the level of the grass under control: don’t let it get to an excessive height, 10 or 12 centimeters maximum. If you’re not experts, the general rule to abide is to cut no more than a third of this measure.
In order to have the cut height set properly, just have the lawn mower positioned on a plain and regular surface and have the distance between the blades and the soil measured with a meter.
Another aspect to take into account is the variety of grass. There are several ones, each one with different features.
